Summer of Death's 'Kickflip the Economy' Skate Contest

Summer of Death contest.Things started to look promising during warm ups as everything dried up. Fresh board shop kicked off a BBQ and Este pizza dropped off an endless mountain of delicious pies while the Natty Light girls kept it sexy in the Natty Lounge where we had 500 beers to drink away the day. Just as we were about to start the contest the rain gods kicked it into high gear with a hell storm of rain and wind. The course was flooded and everyone took shelter under the sponsor tents. Everyone except one local ripper named Jackson. He kept shredding the entire time eventually drawing out more kids to skate. We tried to wait out the rain but there was no end. Dark ominous clouds spread across the sky in every direction; there was no end in sight. We finally said fuck it; this contest is starting rather it dries up or not. The 17 and under kids got the first heat, someone must have felt sympathy for the little grommets because the rain stopped for their session. The little rippers shredded it hard but it was the open division rippers that really brought the reign. Raindrops fell faster then the stock market on the day of the Kickflip The Economy Skate contest presented by Slug Magazine, Natty Light and Circa. It was 10am Saturday morning (relatively early considering last nights debauchery didnt end until 4:30am) as some friends and I took shelter under a tree grinding metal, setting screws and making a few final cuts to the course obstacles. Theres nothing like playing with power tools in the rain. To move everything we had a small Toyota truck and an old Subaru Legacy with the hatch cut off and modified to skate. Shit was hilarious the ramps looked bigger then the truck as the poured out of the bed. The Subaru couldnt have been more illegal, she had a rattle can makeover, no windshield, no plates and no registration we overloaded it with a massive box, flat bar and mini quarter pipe. Dirk Hogan and myself piloted the beast to the contest site horn blazing the entire way.

Once again the raindrops fell hard but nothing slowed them down. Brodie Penrod got tricky with a backsmith kickflip and smith big spin while Matt Fisher boosted out with a hefty frontside-flip from the car launch. Loosing traction trying to Melon grab the car was Chase Bloody Face Strikwerda. He slipped out and split his head and chin right open. He defiantly needed some stitches but that didnt stop him from finishing up the heat. Im surprised that the skaters ferocity didnt just evaporate the rain around them. My vote for ripper of the day goes out to Andy Leyba. I had never even seen the kid before. He rode the bus to the comp, landed some gnarly tricks including a 50-50 lipslide across the rainbow rail. Clenched second place winning a suitcase full of goodies and left with a massive smile on his face and some how after all his shredding nobody turned in any photos of him. All I have to say is Andy fucking shreds and I hope to see him and those funky hammer pants killing it in our next comp, that kid is an original ripper... an original Cores.

The day came to an epic end and I was defiantly over the cold wetness. It was off to the crows nest of the Natty Light lounge for me. I had some serious beer drinking to do while all my gear dried up. In closing Ill say this. Salt Lake City rips it. I dont know of any other contest that has ever gone down in rain like this. This is how we do cant stop wont stop the skate.
