Matt Lonergan

Name, date of birth, Hometown?
Matt Lonergan, 10/4/90, Woodinville, WA

What are you doing all the way down here in San Diego?
I'm just living with my grandma in Point Loma, eating all of her dank pies, and finishing up my video part for the Animal Style video.

How long have you been skating? What got you started?
I’ve been shred stick riding 8 years now, maybe 9?… I lose track. The first few months I skated off and on. I would skate down my driveway with my X-Games board. I couldn't do much because no one taught me how to ollie. Then I came down to San Diego to visit my cousin and he taught me everything about skating.

Tell me about the Mohawk house in the college area? I heard there was a pretty good mix of people lurking there.
The Mohawk was just a whole other level of gnarly. The first time I was hanging out there, my homie Kurt was riding his bike off of the roof. All of the hood rats came over and there was a battle rap between a fat Star Trek-looking guy and a thug. I walked inside the house and saw a dude in skin-tight jeans doing the moonwalk and a bunch of Asian kids who looked like they were 12. I just remember sitting down on the couch and laughing for the longest time. It was too epic for me to handle. The only thing of value there got stolen that night, which was a used electric razor without the charger. So somebody got to shave a few times for free before it ran out of battery.

How was skateboarding different in Seattle than down here in San Diego?
We call Seattle the crust. Every session ends with cuts all over your body because the pavement sucks there. I learned to be more innovative with the way I skated because the spots were very limited. In San Diego the street spots are like skate parks; there's a lot of them and they're all perfect.

Tell me about skating the Crossroads best trick? What happened after that?
The crossroads contest was fun. Everybody was partying and having a good time. I skated the pyramid hip over the pool and the rainbow rail, got some tricks. Afterwards I was hanging out on the O.B. pier and it was late and no one was up. I was still hammered from the event so I decided to front flip off the pier fully clothed. I had a bum hold onto my keys and my wallet with cash in it. After I swam back to the shore I picked up my stuff and he didn’t steal anything he was the coolest bum ever.

Have you ever had a job?
I worked at the La Jolla red robin as a bus boy. I got fired the first day for forgetting my apron. I'm glad it worked out the way it did because it gave me more time to skate.

What happened up in SF at the Wallenberg contest? How did you feel after that slam to your head?
Wallenberg was gnarly. It was a mosh pit and skating all in one. There were tons of kids fighting to get on this sketchy roll in that was 8ft tall. I almost got pushed off of it so many times. I had to mosh my way in there I only got a few tries for the switch heel. I landed on it the second try. The third time I committed to one that I shouldn’t have stuck with I turned backside when I caught the switch heel and landed backwards on my board and I hit my dome full speed. I don’t get how I didn’t crack my head open. I felt dizzy for a few days and I had a headache for a few weeks.

What are your plans for 2010? Any new years resolutions?
I'm just going to keep the good times rolling.
