Brandon Perelson interview

Whats your Name, Age & Home town?
Brandon Perelson, 16 Years old, San Diego, California

When did you first start skateboarding & Why?
I was probably about six or seven, I would have to say my Brother pretty much got me into skateboarding, I used to skate with him a lot when he got into it. We used to play Hockey and shit, we just got into different things together and skateboarding just felt natural.

Not trying to bust your balls here or anything but didn't you used to Rollerblade?
Fuck you and Yes

So I heard you and Zack Dowdy grew up skating at the Clairemont bowl, How did that work out?
We grew up skating Ray's Pool behind Clairemont and just skating random little backyard spots, and everything we could find in San Diego.

Your brother is "Public icon" vert Shredder, What made you become more of a underground pool skater?
Well I do skate vert with my brother, try and mix it up a little bit. But everyone used to skate Clairemont together (Remillard, Alex Perelson, Josh Stafford..) Me and Dowdy would start skating Rays and shit, we started Branching off and skating pools and different parks, I would go up to Oregon and take little trips more then contest. Contest aren't a bad thing but it's just not what I'm into but I'm stoked my brother is making money. I just got into SD skate rat punk, Like Duane Peters & Getor just got me stoked on that kind of stuff i've just been sticking with that type of skating.

I heard your quite a musician yourself, does Skateboarding & Punk Rock go hand in hand?
Well it's the same thing as skateboarding, It's about having Fun and doing what your into doing.

So going down the line, how did you end up skating at Washington St more then Clairemont? How would you get down there?
Well my Brother always wanted to skate the Clairemont Park, because it was the only park with a vert ramp in San Diego. So my Dad would always take us there. I was'nt always really hyped on going there all the time. So i would just start taking the trolly to meet up with some friends or something and go downtown to skate around a little bit, Washington St was right off the trolly. You did'nt have to pay or wear any pads and it's just a fucking cool skatepark so i ended up stopping and skating there a lot.

That became more of your stomping grounds?
It's just San Diego dude, like I honestly wouldn't rather live anywhere else in the world.

That's funny because right now we're in Oregon, So that brings up the next question. What's your favorite skate destination in the world (Besides SD)?
I've been on a lot of sick skate trips with my good friend Robin from Santa Cruz, going to SC, San Jose, Fresno, Just skating a lot of good pools and stuff. Traveling period is the best destination meeting new People that skate is fucking cool, that's what gets me hyped on skating. Because all these other guys are into the same thing your into, It's cool.

Where do you get the best vibes skating, other then San Diego?
I have to say either Santa Cruz or Oregon, Because Santa Cruz is so small and everyone knows each other. Like DAF, everyone is cool and just having a good time. Cool skaters hanging out with each other and their down to take you to new spots all the time. Up here there is just so many spots and all these guys that acutally built them.

Who do you skate with up in SC?
Raven Tershey, Robin, Dan Robinson super cool dude that no one knows about, took me to tonnes of pools up here, cool fucking dude. Steven and a couple of other homies here and there.

Who / What gets you hyped in the morning to wake up?
Every morning I wake up and look at the wall in front of my bed and see a picture of Jason Jesse standing up on top of his motorcycle, that keeps me going everyday. As far as pros and other guys like that, I would have to say Andy Roy I'm really hyped on his skating right now. Neil Headding's is a big influence too I like skating with him a lot. As for my favorite people to skate with are anyone who hypes up the session, and is down for the mission, Rye, Rolled Tacos, Everyone at the bridge.

I know there are lots of crazy things you've done with your brother, but whats the first that comes to mind?
One day he ended up fracturing his Ankle and i got this Gnarly concussion, Just because we jumped up on my roof and thought it would be funny to jump 2 storeys down to the ground. We used to have this real shitty wood quarter pipe in front of our house for 2 years and we poured a bunch of Gas on it and tried to launch off of it, Wood plus Gas equals really slippy, so don't try that at home.

What's your go to trick?
Just flowing around every place I get to skate, grinding, trying inverts, just doing what feels natural.

Give me a good moto to live by..
Live life to the fullest, skate, do what you really enjoy, be who you really are. Fuck anybody who does'nt care about it.

You had a tattoo gun shortly, Are you into drawing?
Well I just like doing art, painting, Doodling on a piece of paper, Write some shit in the sand with a stick, Whatever gets you going, Stencils are fucking fun too. There is no limit to what you can do with art it's the same as skating you can just do what you want it's rad.

Have you ever sold any of your art or "published" it?
I took my stencils to a couple of skateparks when going on trips, and if anybody likes them and wants one I'll just ask for a couple of bucks for snacks on the road. I'll do a good job hopefully so it makes them want to ride the fuck out of that board untill it's completely dead.

How does a vegetarian skater stay alive on road trips?
Um a lot of stuff I can't mention and stuff that would get me in trouble, but you can basically live off anything. If you get enough sleep and eat the right stuff it's ok, my diet mainly consists of mexican food.

What's next for you?
Kind of just do everything day by day. Really hyped on getting stuff from Javoro right now those guys are really cool and down to hook it up with some damn good wheels, trying to film more and get on the grind.

where are we at and what just happened?
Where camping in Myrtle Creek, Oregon Where in the middle of a forest.

How did you get into the music that you like now?
Basically my mom got me into punk shows and when I was really little she would take me to record shops and thrift shops and get me cd's and stuff she liked as a kid, which led me to get into more music, You can just mix any type of music together and make a new genre in its self, you can express your feelings through music and art that's what makes it cool.

You grew up in Spring Valley right?
Yeah up untill 7th grade I lived right behind the middle school in spring valley and I used to steal my breakfest from that albertsons and never got caughtt once.

Well it's in print now, How did you get around places to skate when you lived in East County?
Well when i was younger my dad were super cool about that and he'd drop me and you off at the park and my mom was always down to drive out to palm springs so we could skate. Basically my family is just really supportive and are down to drive and help me out.

Do you consider yourself a philosopher?
I'm not a philosopher but i just like to think of different positive outlooks on life and different ways to enjoy stuff and be stoked on things

would you say you have that pma?
I have that positive mental attitude ya

If you weren't skating what would you be doing right now?
I would either be playing a house show in some random place in imperial beach or something or at home or just causing some mischief with some cans, doing something dangerous.

is expressing yourself a good thing to do with skateboarding if your not into it yet?
Well people shouldn't have reasons to get into anything by that logic you shouldn't have to get into things because you have problems you just get into whatever feels real in life. If you just started skating than it doesn't matter if your good, if your feeling it then your feeling it.

Shouts for anything or what do you want to do right now?
Probably like to shout out to the heads at the bridge and everyone that helps build it because if they did'nt build that park i don't know what i would be doing. Matt and Mikey at Route 44 they've supported me for a long time since i was a little kid, Everyone I skate with, Jivaro, DAF, Noah, Robin, Raven, Anyone who is down for the cause and skateboarders everywhere.

If someone came to SD on a skate trip what should they do?
Go to Washington St first then down hill to downtown and hit up some street spots and maybe just try to find some spots and hit up some parks. I always take my friends from out of town to Ray's pool because it's a solid place to be and skate.
