Patrick Beaudouin - When and why did you and Mike Manidis (your partner) decide to open a skate shop? |
| Ryen Motzek (Co-Owner) - We decided in late 06' that we wanted to open a shop in San Mateo because
closing of the due to Fausto Vitello's passing away. I helped open, and
worked the DLXSM shop for many years, and became a part of the scene... and
since no shops were available for the local community, Mike and I felt we
had to step it up. |
Atlas' 2 Year Anniversary is coming up. How does it feel to be 2 years in
the game? |
| Yeah, it's really crazy that 2 years has already passed. The shop was meant
to be a hobby/ community effort, and it's now a full fledged respected
business and slowly growing into a brand. It's a great feeling, we couldn't
ask for more. |

What are some future plans for the shop? |
| Future plans are to grow the brand of Atlas.. for Mike and I, it's truly the
most rewarding feeling to have people rocking our stuff, and seeking our
stuff out online, or at the shop, and taking pride in repping an independent
core skate shop. We'd also like for there to be more Atlas store's.. |
How did you come up with the name Atlas? How long of a process was it to
decide on that name for the shop? |
| Atlas came from a list of thousand of names, and was the result of a focus
group of close friends deciding that Atlas made the most sense. Our goal
from day one was to be a bit different that the run of the mill skate shop,
we wanted to get noticed, and hopefully take this beyond San Mateo, or even
California.. the further we can reach out, the more chance we have of
sustaining. |
You just received a degree in advertising and you've been in the skate business for a while; how has your
past experiences and credentials assisted in making the shop what it is today? |
| Yes, just finally finished up school, it's been a long time coming. I feel
that the creative thinking combined with business necessities is what's
helped for my part of Atlas. In Advertising we have to create something
cool, catchy, but it also has to be functional for business.. I feel that
those teachings have definitely been applied to Atlas. |
Atlas has a pretty solid, well-rounded team; is there anything that you look for specifically in a team rider,
how did the team com about? |
| Yeah, Atlas is a pretty solid team of up and coming skateboarders. We're
actually blessed to have such a solid scene with some very talented folks.
What we look for is someone who enjoys skateboarding. I have a good amount
of people that I look after (team riders and friends that are down with
Atlas), and all of them have love for skateboarding, and do it with skill
and style. |
Any shout outs or thanks? |
| I'd like to thanks all of my friends, family, the brands that have supported
us along the way to help us build up Atlas to get it to where it is today.
And most importantly, the customers and fans of Atlas that have loyalty
supported us over the last two years. |
